Historical context

Lysimachus, a companion and officer of Alexander the Great, was appointed strategos of Thrace in 323 BC and became king of Thrace in 306 BC before dying in 281 BC at the Battle of Corupedium. Byzantion was an ancient Greek city colonized by settlers from Megara in the 7th century BC. This Hellenistic gold stater, an ancient Greek coin denomination, was issued by the city of Byzantion in Thrace long after the king's death, carrying his royal title alongside the deified image of Alexander.
