Reverse: Apollo (Bonus Eventus) standing left, holding patera and laurel-branch; at his feet, lighted and garlanded altar. Legend: ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΠΟΛΕΙΤΩΝ. Historical context

This bronze coin was struck at Philippopolis in Thrace during the reign of Antoninus Pius, who ruled as Roman emperor from AD 138 to 161. Antoninus had been adopted as successor by Hadrian shortly before the latter's death. The issuing city, originally founded as a polis by Philip the Great of ancient Macedonia in 342 BC, later came under Roman governance in the historic region of Thrace.
