Historical context
Pautalia, an ancient city in Thrace originally named Ulpia Pautalia after Emperor Trajan, operated its own civic coinage, assembly, and magistrates under the Roman Empire. During the imperial regnum, the city minted civic coins from the reign of Antoninus Pius through to Caracalla. Caracalla, born Marcus Aurelius Antoninus into the Severan dynasty, served as co-emperor alongside his father Septimius Severus from 198 before becoming sole ruler from 211 to 217 AD.
