Historical context
Mesembria, corresponding to modern Nesebar on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast in Burgas Province, is an ancient settlement defined by more than three millennia of history. Situated in Thrace, the town repeatedly found itself on the frontier of threatened empires. During the Hellenistic Period, this coastal centre produced civic coinage, as reflected in this issue attributed to the 3rd–2nd century BC.
