Historical context

In antiquity, Apollonia was a prosperous Greek colony originally named Antheia, located on the southern Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. Tetradrachms, nominally equivalent to four drachmae, originated in Ancient Greece in the late 6th century BC and became standard trade coins across Classical Antiquity. Often produced to fund state expenses such as military pay, tetradrachms commonly adhered to the Attic standard, which gradually became dominant.
