Historical context
The stater was an ancient coin denomination used in various regions of Greece and neighbouring lands. Chersonesus Thracica, known in antiquity as the Thracian Chersonese, occupied the Gallipoli Peninsula in East Thrace between the Aegean Sea and the Dardanelles. During the Archaic Period, around 510–490 BC, civic authorities in this peninsula issued fractional silver coinage, including this 1/12 stater.
