Large denomination (bronze) under Amadokos II., dated 359–351 BC. Corpus Nummorum, the online type corpus of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, records it as CN type 21624 (period: Classical Period; issuing authority type: ruler).

Obverse: Bunch of grapes. Reverse: Double axe. Legend: ΑΜΑΤΟΚΟ. Measured specimens give a mean weight of 15.12 g (mean of 3 recorded specimens) and a diameter of 21–21.5 mm (from 2 recorded specimens).

Historical context

Amadocus II was an Odrysian ruler in Thrace who governed from 360 to around 351 BC. Following the murder of Cotys I in September 360 BC, Amadocus II challenged the succession of Cersobleptes and, by 357 BC, secured Athenian support to partition the realm. Under this arrangement, Amadocus II gained authority over central Thrace, generally situated west of the river Hebrus and north of Maroneia, where he issued coinage until disappearing from records around 352–351 BC.
