Historical context

Commodus ruled as Roman emperor from 177 to 192, first alongside his father Marcus Aurelius and subsequently as sole ruler from 180 until his assassination in December 192 ended the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. His sole reign saw an increasingly dictatorial leadership and the growth of a deific personality cult. This bronze coin was issued under his imperial authority between AD 191 and 192 by the civic administration of Hadrianopolis in Thrace.
