Historical context
Pautalia, known as Ulpia Pautalia and located at modern Kyustendil in Bulgaria, was an ancient Thracian settlement of the Dentheletae. Operating under Roman municipal administration, the city held civic institutions including an assembly, magistrates, and its own coinage, while its temples honoured deities such as Hermes, Zeus, and Asclepius. Its mint operated under the Roman Empire from Antoninus Pius to Caracalla, who ruled as sole emperor from 211 to 217 following the death of Septimius Severus and the murder of Geta.
