Historical context

Lysimachus, a Thessalian officer and bodyguard of Alexander the Great, was appointed strategos of Thrace after Alexander's death in 323 BC and became king of Thrace in 306 BC, reigning until he was killed at the Battle of Corupedium in 281 BC. Lysimachia was a Hellenistic Greek town situated on the Thracian Chersonese. Struck between c. 297 and 281 BC under Lysimachos, this gold stater reflects his royal coinage issued on the Attic weight standard.
