Historical context
Caracalla, born Lucius Septimius Bassianus and later styled Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, was Roman emperor from 198 to 217 AD, ruling as sole emperor following the death of his father Septimius Severus and the murder of his brother Geta in 211. His reign saw significant domestic upheaval, military campaigns against Germanic tribes, and the issuance of the Antonine Constitution. This coin was struck under his reign by Hadrianopolis, an ancient settlement in Thrace originally known as Orestias before its refounding by Hadrian.
