Historical context
Byzantion was an ancient Greek city colonised by Greeks from Megara in the 7th century BC, later known in late antiquity as Constantinople. Caracalla, born Lucius Septimius Bassianus and later called Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, was Roman emperor from 198 to 217 AD, ruling alone after the death of his father Septimius Severus and the murder of his brother Geta in 211 AD. This civic bronze issue was struck for the city during Caracalla's sole reign, which ended with his assassination in 217.
