Historical context
Anchialos was an ancient town situated on a rocky peninsula in Burgas Bay on the Black Sea coast. Lucius Septimius Severus served as Roman emperor from 193 to 211 after seizing power during the Year of the Five Emperors following the death of Pertinax in 193. Civic bronze coinages such as this four-unit piece were struck under his imperial authority during his reign across provincial centres in Thrace.
