Historical context

Apollonia, earlier known as Antheia, was an ancient Greek colony situated in Thrace. In 72 BC the settlement was devastated by a Roman siege, after which it diminished in significance. The tetradrachm denomination originated in Ancient Greece as a large silver coin equivalent to four drachmae, frequently minted across various standards—most dominantly the Attic standard—for state expenditures and public messaging.
