Dichalkon in bronze struck at Apollonia Pontike in Thrace, dated c. 212–73 BC. Corpus Nummorum, the online type corpus of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, records it as CN type 22050 (period: Hellenistic Period; issuing authority type: city).

Obverse: Apollo standing facing, holding laurel branch in right hand and arrow and bow in left hand. Reverse: Inverted anchor;  under right fluke, crayfish, under left fluke, legend. Legend: ΙΦΙ. Measured specimens give a mean weight of 1.42 g (mean of 3 recorded specimens) and a diameter of 11.8–12.2 mm (from 2 recorded specimens). Recorded findspots: Sozopol (Созопол).

Historical context

Apollonia was a prosperous Greek colony situated on the southern Black Sea coast. During the Hellenistic period, before its devastation by a Roman siege in 72 BC reduced it to a town of lesser importance, the city operated as a self-governing issuer. This bronze dichalkon represents local civic coinage produced in Thrace prior to the Roman conquest.
