Historical context
Anchialos, an ancient city on the Black Sea coast of Thrace, served as the issuing authority for this bronze coinage during the Roman Imperial Period. Lucius Septimius Severus reigned as Roman emperor from 193 to 211, having taken power in 193 during the Year of the Five Emperors following the death of Pertinax. This coin was struck between AD 195 and 198, a period during which Severus defeated his rival claimants Pescennius Niger and Clodius Albinus, campaigned in the east, and named his elder son Caracalla co-emperor.
