Historical context
Lucius Septimius Severus ruled as Roman emperor from 193 to 211, securing power during the Year of the Five Emperors following the death of Pertinax. Between 195 and 198, Severus was engaged in consolidating imperial authority and campaigning against internal rivals and external threats, culminating in the sack of Ctesiphon in 197 and the proclamation of Caracalla as co-emperor in 198. During this era of the Roman Imperial Period, provincial civic coinage was produced in Thrace at the coastal city of Anchialos.
