Historical context

Septimius Severus served as Roman emperor from 193 to 211, seizing power after the death of Pertinax during the Year of the Five Emperors. In 208, the year of this issue, Severus travelled to Britain to strengthen Hadrian's Wall and reoccupy the Antonine Wall. The bronze coin was struck under his authority by the city of Anchialos, an ancient seaside settlement on the Black Sea coast within the Roman province of Thrace.
