Caracalla, born Lucius Septimius Bassianus and named Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, was proclaimed co-ruler of the Roman Empire by his father Septimius Severus in 198, later governing as sole emperor from 211 until 217. This bronze denomination was struck in AD 205 under his authority at Anchialos in Thrace, an ancient settlement situated along the Black Sea coast on the site of modern Pomorie in Bulgaria.
