Historical context

Vespasian reigned as Roman emperor from 69 to 79 after emerging victorious from the civil war known as the Year of the Four Emperors, establishing the Flavian dynasty. His younger son Domitian held a ceremonial role during his reign before later becoming emperor himself from 81 to 96. This coin was minted during Vespasian's rule by the civic authorities of Abdera in Thrace, an ancient Greek polis situated on the Thracian coast opposite the island of Thasos.
