Historical context

Pautalia, situated in Thrace and designated Ulpia Pautalia after Emperor Trajan, functioned as an important Roman city with its own Boule, magistrates, and minting privileges. The mint issued coinage from the reign of Antoninus Pius to that of Caracalla, who ruled as Roman emperor from 198 to 217 AD, governing alone after 211 AD following the death of his father Septimius Severus and the murder of his brother Geta. Among its religious buildings was a temple dedicated to Hera, who appears on civic bronze issues of this period.
