Historical context

Deultum was an ancient city located in Thrace near the mouth of the river Sredetska reka on the coast of Lake Mandrensko, close to modern Debelt. Philip the Arab, born Marcus Julius Philippus, was Roman Emperor from 244 to 249 after serving as Praetorian prefect under Gordian III. This bronze four-unit coin was struck under his imperial rule by the civic authorities of Deultum.
