Historical context

Chersonesus was an ancient Greek colony established in the 6th century BC by settlers from Heraclea Pontica in Bithynia. Located on the Black Sea coast on the southwestern part of the Crimean Peninsula, the settlement functioned during much of the classical period as a democracy administered by elected archons and a council known as the Damiorgi. This bronze coin was struck at Chersonesos Taurike between c. 350 and 300 BC, representing civic coinage from the Classical to Hellenistic period.
