Historical context
Abdera was an important Greek polis located on the Thracian coast, situated 17 km east-northeast of the mouth of the Nestos River and opposite the island of Thasos. Founded as a colony in Thracian territory during the age of Greek colonization, the city flourished into a major urban centre of classical antiquity before entering a decline after the 4th century AD. As an autonomous polis, Abdera struck its own silver coinage, including drachms and tetrobols.
