Historical context

Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, commonly known as Caracalla, ruled the Roman Empire from 198 to 217 AD as a member of the Severan dynasty. Initially elevated as co-emperor by his father, Septimius Severus, he became sole ruler after murdering his brother Geta in 211. During his reign, Roman provincial cities like Hadrianopolis in Thrace (historically known also as Adrianople) issued bronze civic coinage depicting the emperor alongside figures such as Tyche.
