Historical context
Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, commonly known as Caracalla, ruled the Roman Empire from 198 to 217 AD, initially as co-emperor with his father Septimius Severus and then as sole ruler from 211 AD after the murder of his brother Geta. His reign ended with his assassination in 217 during a campaign against the Parthian Empire. This bronze 5 unit was struck between AD 212 and 217 by the city of Augusta Traiana, an important Thracian centre renamed under Roman rule.
