Historical context

Philip I, commonly known as Philip the Arab, was Roman emperor from 244 to 249 following the death of Gordian III. His wife, Marcia Otacilia Severa, served as Roman empress during his five-year reign, which marked an unusually stable period in the crisis of the third century. During this era, bronze coinage of this type was issued by the ancient city of Mesembria in Thrace.
