Medallion in bronze struck at Perinthos in Thrace under Caracalla, dated AD 212–217. Corpus Nummorum, the online type corpus of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, records it as CN type 2626 (period: Roman Imperial Period; issuing authority type: city).

Obverse: Laureate bust of Caracalla, right, wearing cuirass, aegis and spear over left shoulder; on breastplate gorgoneion. Legend: ΑVΤ Κ Μ ΑVΡ ϹЄΟVΗΡ ΑΝΤΩΝΙΝΟϹ ΑVΓ. Reverse: Demeter and Homonoia; inbetween, altar; to left, Demeter standing right, holding ears of corn in right hand and a rtorch in her left hand, at her feet, cista mystica; to right, Homonoia standing left, wearing kalathos, holding patera and cornucopia. Legend: ΠЄΡΙΝΘΙΩΝ ΝЄΩΚΟΡΩΝ.

Historical context

Perinthus, also known as Heraclea, was a flourishing city of ancient Thrace situated on the Propontis, around 90 kilometres west of Byzantium. Caracalla, born Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, was Roman emperor from 198 to 217 AD, ruling as sole emperor from 211 AD following the death of his father Septimius Severus and the murder of his brother Geta. His reign concluded in 217 when he was assassinated by a disaffected soldier during a military campaign against the Parthian Empire.
