Historical context
Lucius Aurelius Verus served as Roman emperor from 161 until his death in 169, ruling alongside his adoptive brother Marcus Aurelius in the first instance of simultaneous joint rule over the Roman Empire. A member of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty, Verus devoted most of his reign to directing the war against Parthia, followed by participation in the Marcomannic Wars before his death. During this imperial period, civic bronze coinages were produced under his authority in provincial centres such as Traianopolis in Thrace.
