Obverse: Laureate head of Septimius Severus, right. Legend: ΑΥ Κ Λ ϹΕΠ ϹΕΥΗΡΟϹ Π. Reverse: The three Charites (or Nymphs?) standing facing, holding jars; in front, bearded river-god, reclining left on water-urn. Legend: ΗΓ ϹΤΑΤΙ ΒΑΡΒΑΡΟV ΤΡΑΙΑΝΟΠΟΛΙΤΩΝ. Measured specimens give a diameter of 28–29 mm (from 1 recorded specimen). Historical context

Lucius Septimius Severus served as Roman emperor from 193 to 211, taking control during the Year of the Five Emperors following the death of Pertinax. After securing power by defeating rival generals, he campaigned across the empire, sacking the Parthian capital of Ctesiphon in 197 and elevating his son Caracalla to co-emperor in 198. During this period, Roman provincial civic coinage was struck at Traianopolis, an ancient settlement located in Thrace.
