Historical context

Caracalla, originally Lucius Septimius Bassianus and later Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, was a Roman emperor belonging to the Severan dynasty. After ruling alongside his father Septimius Severus from 198 AD, and briefly sharing power with his brother Geta following their father's death in 211, Caracalla had Geta murdered to reign alone until his death in 217. Struck between AD 212 and 217, this bronze unit was minted by the civic authorities of Traianopolis in Thrace during his sole rule.
