Historical context

Perinthos, also known as Perinthus, was a flourishing city of ancient Thrace situated on the Propontis. Struck during the Roman Imperial Period, this civic medallion was issued under Elagabalus, who reigned as Roman emperor from 218 to 222 after being raised to the Principate at 14 years of age following an army revolt. Posthumously named after the sun god Elagabal, of whom he had served as head priest in Syria, his brief rule ended with his death in 222.
