Historical context
Perinthus, also known as Heraclea, was a major city in ancient Thrace situated on the Propontis, west of Selymbria and Byzantium. Marcus Aurelius Severus Alexander, also known as Alexander Severus, was Roman emperor from AD 222 to 235 and the final ruler of the Severan dynasty. Having succeeded his murdered cousin Elagabalus at the age of 13, his 13-year reign proved prosperous domestically, though campaigns against Germanic tribes led to internal discontent and his assassination in 235.
