Medallion in bronze struck at Perinthos in Thrace under Gordian III., dated AD 238–244. Corpus Nummorum, the online type corpus of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, records it as CN type 3300 (period: Roman Imperial Period; issuing authority type: city).

Obverse: Laureate bust of Gordian III, right, wearing cuirass and paludamentum; gorgoneion on breastplate. Legend: ΑVΤ Κ Μ ΑΝΤ ΓΟΡΔΙΑΝΟϹ ΑVΓ. Reverse: Serapis and Homonoia; to left, Serapis standing right, wearing kalathos, holding sceptre and crowning Homonoia; to right, Homonoia standing left, holding wreath and cornucopia; at her feet, left, altar. Legend: ΠΕΡΙΝΘΙΩΝ ΙΩΝΩΝ ΔΙϹ ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ. Measured specimens give a mean weight of 34.61 g (mean of 3 recorded specimens) and a diameter of 34.8–38 mm (from 4 recorded specimens).

Historical context

Gordian III, born Marcus Antonius Gordianus, reigned as Roman emperor from 238 to 244 after taking power at the age of 13. During his rule, civic bronzes were produced across the Roman Imperial provinces. This medallion was issued under his reign by the ancient city of Perinthos, situated on the Propontis within the Roman province of Thrace.
