Medallion in bronze struck at Perinthos in Thrace under Gordian III., dated AD 238–244. Corpus Nummorum, the online type corpus of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, records it as CN type 3302 (period: Roman Imperial Period; issuing authority type: city).

Obverse: Laureate bust of Gordian III, right, wearing cuirass and paludamentum; gorgoneion on breastplate. Legend: ΑVΤ Κ Μ ΑΝΤ ΓΟΡΔΙΑΝΟϹ ΑVΓ. Reverse: Demeter and Homonoia; to left, Demeter standing right, holding ears of corn and torch; at her feet, cista mystica; to right, Homonoia, wearing calathus, holding patera and cornucopia; at her feet, altar. Legend: ΔΙϹ ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ ΠΕΡΙΝΘΙΩΝ. Measured specimens give a mean weight of 38.78 g (from 1 recorded specimen) and a diameter of 40 mm (from 1 recorded specimen).

Historical context

Perinthus, later known as Heraclea, was a major city in Thrace situated on the Propontis. Gordian III served as Roman emperor from AD 238 to 244, ascending to sole rule at the age of 13 after the earlier reigns of his grandfather Gordian I and uncle Gordian II. During his reign, Perinthus issued civic bronze medallions bearing his imperial name and portrait.
