Historical context

This bronze coin was produced by the city of Krithote in Thrace, a historical and geographical region located in Southeast Europe bounded by the Balkan Mountains, the Aegean Sea and the Black Sea. In classical antiquity, lands inhabited by ancient Thracians extended north to modern-day Northern Bulgaria and Romania, as well as west into Northern Greece, North Macedonia and Serbia. The region later roughly corresponded to a province within the Roman Empire.
