Historical context

Caracalla was Roman emperor from 198 to 217, initially proclaimed co-ruler under his father Septimius Severus and ruling alone after 211 following the murder of his brother Geta. His reign was notable for the Antonine Constitution, which extended Roman citizenship across the empire, as well as campaigns against Germanic peoples and the Parthian Empire before his assassination in 217. This bronze denomination was struck under his authority by the civic mint of Serdica, an administrative centre located in Roman Thrace.
