Historical context

Serdica was a Roman city located on the site of modern Sofia, Bulgaria. During the Severan dynasty, Emperor Septimius Severus proclaimed his son Caracalla co-ruler in AD 198 and later appointed his younger son Geta as co-emperor in 209. Following Severus's death in February 211, the two brothers were intended to govern jointly, an alliance visually celebrated on the civic coinage of Serdika showing Geta and Caracalla before Geta was murdered by Caracalla in December 211.
