Period

circa 1863/65

This brisé fan, dating from circa 1863 to 1865, is crafted from walnut and rosewood. The fan features a hand-painted depiction, executed after a photograph, showing Crown Prince Rudolf at approximately five years of age wearing a Hungarian-style uniform, nestled within a bouquet of violets.

The fan is signed by F. Theyer in Vienna. The individual wooden leaves are connected by a brown silk binding, which remains intact though slightly torn on the upper cover leaf. The fan measures 24 cm in length. It is housed in an accompanying case with a white silk lining, which features a gold-stamped manufacturer's mark for Fr. Rosenberg, located at Graben in Vienna. The overall dimensions of the case are 25.7 x 5.5 x 5 cm.
