Netsuke depicting Shoki and Oni is held by Badisches Landesmuseum Karlsruhe. Museum description: The netsuke form, carved from the wood of a deciduous tree, depicts the mythological demon queller ("Shôki") and the demon ("Oni"). On one side, in front of a folding screen, stands Shôki in Chinese dress and in a combative pose with a sword in his right hand. He is hunting Oni, who is on the other side of the screen. The demon is depicted in motion and protects himself with a shield. The netsuke is signed with the carver's name: "Hidemasa". Like all pieces worked fully in the round, this example belongs to the type of so-called "katabori-netsuke". A "netsuke" (pronounced: netske) is a toggle with two holes for threading the cord. It was loosely attached as a counterpart to a so-called "inro" on the Japanese obi (= belt) and was thus part of the traditional Japanese clothing belonging to the kimono The museum record gives measurements Höhe: 3.15 cm, Breite: 3.45 cm, Tiefe: 1.9 cm (Gesamt). These details come from the holding museum's own record; how far this object represents a wider collectible type has not yet been independently verified.
