Period

1911

Georges Barbier was a leading fashion illustrator in Paris in the early 20th century. He collaborated with the most avant garde fashion designers of the day, such as Paul Poiret and Madame Paquin. French fashion from 1909 onwards was strongly influenced by the productions of the 'One Thousand and One Nights' stories by the Ballets Russes, with costume designs by Léon Bakst.

Decorated fan of printed and hand-coloured paper and painted silk. The sticks and guards are of bone with painted decoration of grapes and butterflies. The rivet and cord loop are of yellow metal, and the cord and tassels are of various coloured silk threads twisted together. When folded the leaf projects beyond the guards in a series of zig-zags.
