Period

1923

This 1923 German Notgeld (emergency money) piece was issued by the Landesbank der Provinz Westfalen during the Weimar Republic period. Struck in gilt bronze, this specimen measures 45 mm in diameter and weighs 31.7 grams.

The obverse features the denomination '10000 Mark' beneath a central depiction of a horse, surrounded by the inscription 'NOTGELD DER PROVINZ WESTFALEN' with the date 1923. The reverse displays a right-facing bust of Freiherr vom Stein, accompanied by the circular legend 'MINISTER VOM STEIN•DEUTSCHLANDS FUHRER IN SCHWERER ZEIT' along with his years of birth and death, 1757-1831. This specific example is referenced as Funck-645.7c and Jaeger N20a.

It is encapsulated within a protective NGC plastic holder, which is currently noted to have a chip to the bottom right. The design reflects the economic conditions of early 20th-century Germany, where local financial institutions issued supplementary currency to address acute shortages of official legal tender.
