This Japanese carving depicts a standing male figure holding a traditional hand-held fan. The piece is executed in ivory and is mounted upon a circular ebony base.

Stylistically, the carving exhibits the characteristics of traditional Japanese figure sculpture, presented here as a small-scale decorative object. The item measures 3 inches in total height, including the base, with a footprint of approximately 1 by 0.75 inches. It is attributed to an unknown Japanese artist and is dated to the early 20th century. The carving was previously part of the Morris Shumiatcher collection and was included in the University of Regina, President's Art Collection as part of the Shumiatcher donation.
