Period
Late Qing Dynasty
This late Qing Dynasty brisé fan is crafted from ivory and measures 29.5 cm in height. The structure consists of 20 individual sticks held together by a ribbon.
Both sides of the fan are decorated with intricate gilt motifs, featuring a peacock positioned within a fenced garden, surrounded by peony, bamboo, and prunus blossoms. A group of cranes is depicted wading in a nearby pond, adding to the detailed landscape composition. The fan is accompanied by a hinged Canton lacquer box, which features figure decorations on the cover and is hand-painted on the interior with exotic birds.
The fan reflects the elaborate craftsmanship associated with the period, utilizing fine materials and delicate ornamental work typical of export art from this era. The connection ribbon is noted as being torn between two of the sticks, though it remains intact in other areas, and there is minimal wear to the gilt decoration on the ivory surface.
