Netsuke, wood, Shoki hiding from demon, signed Masakazu, Japan, late 18th century

DocumentedSupported by at least one credible specialist source.

Record status

Individual type · partial

Period

late 18th century

The netsuke is a toggle. Above all they had to have the means of attaching the cord. This is a three- dimensional carving, such as this netsuke. This example is signed Masakuzu. This netsuke of Shoki hidding in a bush is beautifully formed and humorous with the seemingly fearsome figure of a demon queller to frightened to emerge. The entire circumference of the netsuke is intricately carved with even Shoki’s clothing bearing a distinctive textile pattern. Netsuke in wood of Shoki hiding from demon, signed Masakazu

Bequeathed by Mr. George Salting, accessioned in 1910.
