Period

c.1900

Fontange or forme Ballon shaped folding fan of cream gauze with scrolling foliate pattern formed of gold and brass toned metal sequins and beige silk applique. To the centre is a gouache painted 18th c. style pastoral scene of a young man sitting with a dog at his feet whilst tying a love letter to a dove, set in an oval frame of sequins and silk applique.

The design is a copy of Jacques Firmin Beauvarlet's engraving L'Départ du Courier (The Departure of the Messenger), itself based upon François Boucher's 1765 painting of the same name. The sticks and guard are of tinted red mother of pearl, carved and gilded with gold.
