Record status

Individual type · partial

Period

1770-1790

Fan of watercolour on vellum, with silver and silver-gilt mother-of-pearl sticks, silver and silver-gilt ivory guards. One side of the fan is painted with a chinoiserie scene of 4 men with stylized mountains and a tree, and a European rustic scene with figures in a landscape.

Both are surrounded by designs probably inspired by Chinese export painted ceramics. The other side of the fan is painted in a European rustic scene with a figures of a man and a woman, a dog and rabbit. It was likely inspired by Chinese paintings of landscapes, as it includes an interpretation of their craggy rocks, or possibly fans made in Guangdong for the export market.
