Record status

Individual type · partial

Period

1840s

Fan of watercolour on vellum, with carved mother-of-pearl stick and guards. Both sides are painted in style troubadour with a scene of possibly showing the betrothal/marriage of Louis XIII with Ann of Austria (kneeling) in 1615, during the regency of Marie de’ Medici (seated).

On the other side is a religious scene, the meeting of the infant Jesus with the young John the Baptist, depicted in 17-century dress. Typical of Le Style Troubadour are the approximations of early 17th-century fashion, particularly the breeches for men and the full, paned sleeves worn by men and women.
