DocumentedSupported by at least one credible specialist source.

Record status

Individual type · partial

Period

late 19th century

Folding fan with painted silk leaves and ivory guards and sticks. The ivory guards are carved on the lower part to represent a woven basket with a decorative band towards the bottom. The upper part depicts crysanthemums and peonies supported by sticks, together with a bird on each side, one in flight and the other settled on the flowers. The ivory sticks have partly-shaped edging, but are otherwise undecorated. The rivet and ring are of gold-coloured metal.

The leaves are of silk, with gold powder and painted with colours. One side depicts a cherry tree in blossom with a pair of birds with blue plumage. The other portrays a wisteria, partly in flower and growing round a tree, beside a river with dandelions and other plants.
