Period

1856

This was the admission token belonging to Horatio Nelson, the nephew of Lord Nelson. Born in 1793, he was Viscount Merton, Viscount Trafalgar, the son of Horatio Nelson's brother William. Metal and ivory ticket checks were used for admission to theatres before the invention of paper tickets. Ivory tokens such as these were issued to subscribers for a season, and in this case would have allowed Horatio Nelson access to Stall 84 at Her Majesty's Theatre for the 1856 season.

Ivory token set in gilt edging with gilt mounting and loop for suspension, the obverse etched: 'HER MAJESTY'S THEATRE 1856', the reverse: 'Horatio Nelson Esq. STALL 84'
